Self Publishing On Amazon Explained: Quick Formatting Facts

The process of creating books using Amazon’s publishing tools can indeed be a stressful and time-consuming process, especially if you are just starting out and have no clue whatsoever where to start. In this post I lay down a few basic facts about formatting books for publishing on these platforms, in both hard copy and ebook formats.

Formatting a Word Document for CreateSpace (Hard Copy)         

Font

  • The most common used font on Amazon is Times New Roman
  • Title Page- Book Title Size 28
    – Author name/ Copyright message (©) Bold Size 12
  • About The Author message: Times New Roman Size 14
  • Chapter Headings: Times New Roman Bold Size 12
  • Book interior text: Times New Roman Size 12

Book Layout

NOTE: The most common book size (or Trim Size) on CreateSpace is 6×9 inches, selected by the author during the publishing process on CreateSpace. The below measurements apply to book manuscript format which must be made prior to uploading to CreateSpace.

  • Paper Size (Width & Height): 15.24cm x 22.86cm
  • Margins: -Top/Bottom/Left/Right: 2 cm
  • Margins must be MIRRORED, an option that can be selected in the Page setup field of your computer when setting the margins.
  • The spine width of your book is AUTOMATICALLY calculated during the book setup process. There is a minimum book size required for the title information of your book to appear on the spine. If the book is too small, there will be no title information on the spine.
  • Set paragraph indentation for 1cm: Format>Paragraph>Indentation & Line Spacing
  • Set line spacing to SINGLE 

    Formatting A Word Document For Kindle Direct Publishing (Ebook)

     Font

    • Title Page- Book Title Size 36
      – Author name: Size 16
      -Copyright message (©) Bold Size 12
    • About The Author message: Times New Roman Size 14
    • Chapter Headings: Times New Roman Bold Size 16
    • Book interior text: Times New Roman Size 12

     

    Book Layout

    • Paper Size (Width & Height): 13.69cm x 20.09 cm
    • Margins: -Top/Bottom/Left/Right: ZERO
      *This margin setting will look very strange on the page, and will advise you that it margins are set outside the printable area. This is how margins need to be set for Kindle formatting.
    • Set paragraph indentation for 1cm: Format>Paragraph>Indentation & Line Spacing
    • Set line spacing to SINGLE
    • Save As a WEB PAGE (.htm)

     

    Cover Image

    NOTE: You can use the same cover image file for a CreateSpace book and a Kindle ebook. You can create covers from stock images or your ow personal photos using PicMonkey, Photoshop or other preferred photo editing programs.

    • Cover dimensions: 1600 x 2400 pixels
    • 300 dpi (dots per inch) for CreateSpace hard copy
    • 72 dpi for Kindle ebook
