Hints and Tips for Writers

Your Book Launch: Physical Or Online?

In this day and age of technology, there are more options for your book launch than having at a book store or other physical venue. Online book launches have become a ‘thing’ for many authors, and are a great way to reach a broader audience around the world. However, both physical and online book launches have their pros and cons. You just need to weigh them up, and decide which option is best for you and your book. You might decide to do both!

Physical Book Launch

This option is pretty self explanatory, and has all the aspects an author wants to celebrate the achievement of publishing their book. An actual location, an audience, physical books to sign. However, physical book launches can quickly become costly, and if you are an independent author, you’ll be footing the bill. You’ll need to account for the venue hire fee, catering, and the cost of a print run. The last physical launch I held was at an independent bookstore and cost me just short of $1,000 in total.

There are ways around the hefty expense of a physical book launch. You just need to think outside the box. You could approach a local cafe or bar and ask if they are okay for you to reserve a table or area and have your books for sale, while the venue benefits by having your guests spend their money on drinks and food there.

Online Book Launch

The benefit of an online book launch is that you’re basically not going to have any of the costly outlay required for a launch held at a venue. Need I say more? Plus, your friends, family and fans from all around the world can join you. It can be as long or short as you like, from a few hours to a few days. You could have the ebook version of your book available for free over the weekend. You could publish a series of posts on your social media or blog related to the book and launch. It sounds like a lot of work, but scheduling these posts in advance could help you have it all set up in time for the day, when you just sit back and celebrate!
