Ireland: 31 Days, 31 Photos. Day #5: Ballinasloe

DSC05433.JPG

Ballinasloe is a town in the easternmost part of County Galway in Ireland. It is one of the largest towns in County Galway with a population of approximately 7,200 people.

I came to Ballinasloe to research St. Brigid’s, formally the Connacht District Lunatic Asylum, opened in County Galway in 1833. Standing on the edge of the village, it was one of the earliest of the Irish district asylums. It was intended for the care of ‘curable lunatics’ and opened in a spirit of optimism with regard to its progressive role in public health.
